Our journey with DigGeoNaija began in January 2021 with a vision to transform Nigeria’s geoheritage through advanced technologies. Conceived by Dr. Kamaldeen O. Omosanya shortly after joining the Geohazards theme under the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and the International Geological Correlation Programme (IGCP) in 2020, the concept aimed to harness Nigeria’s rich geological heritage for tourism and revenue generation.

DigGeoNaija aims to revolutionize Nigeria’s geotourism and geosites through the comprehensive digitization, inventorization, and commercialization of its natural heritage. Leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing.Â
Our Objectives
Digitization
We use advanced GIS and AI technologies to accurately map and analyze geosites across Nigeria, creating a detailed digital repository of geological wonders.

We have developed a comprehensive inventory of geosites, completed with high-resolution images, 3D models, and detailed descriptions, accessible through a centralized cloud-based platform.
Commercialization
We have implemented VR and AR to enhance visitor experiences, IoT for real-time site monitoring, and cloud computing for scalable data management and service delivery.
